He is the author of Slavica. The first film of socialist Yugoslavia (produced in Serbia), and the originator of the Partisan genre, it is typical of Yugoslav film. He graduated in acting from the State Acting School in Zagreb. At first, he acted in the theatre, appearing in the classical repertoire, playing roles of Hamlet, Raskoljnikov, duke Miškin and others. He fought in WW II. During his time in the Partisans, he directed and acted in theatre plays. After the war, he acted in film (U planinama Jugoslavije, 1946; Major Bauk, 1951; Ubica na odsustvu, 1965), and directed three feature-length films.
