Commentary:
In his debut film, Sinji galeb, Branko Bauer strongly announced his talent. A certain amount of ‘grittiness’ at the basic level of craft (which was completely understandable in that pioneer age of Croatian and Yugoslavian feature film) is compensated for by an imaginative story, colorful characters and an expressive visual style. With this debut film and his next project, Milioni na otoku, Bauer demonstrated a high level of competency in the genre of films for children and youths. He returned to this genre, although in a slightly different form, in the final phase of his opus with films Zimovanje u Jakobsfeldu and Salaš u Malom Ritu (especially in the famous TV series Salaš u Malom Ritu), as well as in his last film Boško Buha. In 1954, Sinji galeb was shown at festivals of films for children in Mar del Plata and Venice.
