Commentary:
Kad mrtvi zapjevaju is the first comedy by the director Krsto Papić. It is an action comedy of character and mystery with elements of black humor, absurdity and slapstick, along with a dash of political backdrop. Papić did not manage this complex combination as deftly as he might have. Additionally, he burdened his film with an unnecessary excursion into tragedy, which was inspired by the successful Kako je počeo rat na mom otoku svog by his directing assistant, Vinko Brešan. Nevertheless, Kad mrtvi zapjevaju was well received by the audience and the critics. At the Pula film festival it won the Golden Arena for the best director, music and sound (Mladen Pervan), as well as the audience’s award Zlatna vrata.

Other awards: Ft. Lauderdale 1999 - Grand prix (together with the film Ništa o Robertu)
American festival of Comedy 2000 - Jury’s award for a film discovery
